A house on Holley Street is paying about $756 a year too much.
The town says 19 Holley St is worth $153,500. But not long ago it sold, in a normal sale, for $100,000. So the owner is being taxed on about $53,500 of value that is not really there.
That overcharge comes to roughly $756 every year.
Why it matters: if the town's value for your place is higher than what it would actually sell for, you may be paying too much too. You are allowed to ask the town to fix it, and I will walk you through it.
One owner has quietly bought up more than a dozen places around town.
Going through the sale records, one buyer now holds around 17 properties in and around Walton. No single sale looked big on its own. Added together, it is a real piece of the town in one set of hands.
Nobody announces this. It only shows up when you add up years of sales, which is exactly what I do.
Why it matters: when one owner holds that much, they start to shape rents, prices, and what the place turns into. Worth knowing who is buying your valley. I show what the public records say, never people's names.
The state filings show a brand new nonprofit, The Common Room Community Arts, registered on Fair Street on September 25. New arts groups usually mean classes, shows, and another reason to leave the house on a cold night.
Why it matters: if you are looking for things to do, or just to meet a few people, a group this new is a good door to knock on early, before everyone else does.
Saturday morning the library runs Cereal Cinema, a family movie that starts at 10. Friday there is Storytime at 10:30. Not a packed weekend, but both are free and good if you have little ones.
